About this piece

Three plates showing the tarsal bones and metatarsals of Dinoceras mirabile, an extinct genus of herbivorous mammal, original lithographs from volume 10 of Monographs of the United States Geological Survey, Othniel Charles Marsh's Dinocerata, published in 1886. Each plate is printed in black on a cream sheet and lettered "Dinoceras mirabile, Marsh" beneath the figures, with a plate number at the upper right.

The small bones of the ankle and foot are arranged in rows and columns of numbered figures, each drawn from several sides so that its shape can be compared with its neighbors. The heavier tarsal bones and the metatarsals are shaded to bring out their surfaces and joint facets. The draughtsman's name appears at the lower left and the lithographer's credit, New Haven, at the lower right of each plate.

Marsh was professor of paleontology at Yale, and the plates of his monograph document the skeleton of Dinoceras bone by bone.
