About this piece

A set of three original lithograph plates of the limb bones of Dinoceras mirabile, an extinct herbivorous mammal, from Othniel Charles Marsh's monograph on the Dinocerata, volume 10 of the Monographs of the United States Geological Survey, published in 1886. The sheets are printed in gray-black on cream paper, each with its plate number at the upper corner.

All three are lettered "Dinoceras mirabile, Marsh" beneath the image. The first plate arranges small carpal and related bones in a grid of twelve views; the other two show the long, heavy metacarpals and phalanges, each bone drawn from several angles and numbered for reference in Marsh's text. Delicate stipple and hatching model the rough fossil surfaces.

The drawings are signed by the artist at the lower left and by the lithographer E. Crisand of New Haven at the lower right. Marsh's Dinocerata volume was one of the grandest illustrated works to come out of nineteenth-century American paleontology, and its plates remain highly regarded as scientific lithography.
