About this piece
The eastern United States on a steel-engraved map titled "United States", published around 1843, with a small inset titled "Continuation of Florida". The source atlas is not identified. The sheet is printed in black and gray on cream paper, without color.
The map covers the country from the Atlantic coast west across the Mississippi to the edge of Texas, and from the Gulf of Mexico to the Great Lakes, with Canada named at the top. States are lettered across their territory, and rivers, towns, forts and roads are engraved in fine detail, including the Ohio and Mississippi, the Appalachian ridges and the shores of Lake Superior, Michigan and Erie. Texas appears at the lower left, the lands west of Arkansas and Missouri are named, and the peninsula of Florida, too long for the sheet, is carried in the inset at the lower right. The title is lettered at the lower right, with a scale of English miles below.
A map of this date, issued before Texas and Florida were admitted to the Union in 1845, shows the country as it stood in the early 1840s.
