About this piece

The Prairie, a hand-colored steel engraving published in London on September 1, 1841, by a publisher at Norfolk Street, Strand. The title is lettered in script beneath the image, with the publication line below it and the artist and engraver credits at either end.

A hunter lies hidden behind a bank at the right edge of the image, his rifle leveled, and a puff of smoke drifts from the barrel. Two deer wade through a shallow river in front of him, with a lone twisted tree leaning over the bank above. The land recedes to a wide, empty horizon under a huge storm cloud that is already trailing rain on the left.

The subject is the open grassland of the American interior, a favorite theme for English illustrators of books on American scenery in the early Victorian years.
