About this piece
The machinery of a Jamaican sugar mill, an original engraved technical plate titled "Elevation & Plan of an improved Sugar Mill, by Edward Woollery Esq.r of Jamaica", signed "J. Record sculp." It was published in the 1818 London edition of Bryan Edwards' History of the British West Indies.
The upper half is an elevation of the mill: a wooden frame holding three upright rollers side by side, with horizontal timbers above and long angled braces to either side, and a toothed wheel at the right. Below it, separate diagrams show the parts: three circles for the rollers, one of them marked with a diameter in inches, a roller gudgeon, a pivot, a step, a lantern wheel with its pegs, a toothed spur wheel and a brass bearing. A lettered key beneath explains each part, from the side roller gudgeon (a) and the rollers or cylinders (b) to the lantern wheel (e) and the spur wheel (g).
Mills of this type crushed sugar cane to extract the juice, and sugar was the basis of Jamaica's plantation economy, which depended on enslaved labor. Edwards (1743 to 1800) was a Jamaica planter and historian.
