About this piece

New Hampshire in a color-printed county map titled "New Hampshire", from the Ninth Edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica, published in 1884. The sheet is engraved and printed in color, with the counties picked out in delicate tints of green, yellow and pink.

The state is drawn in its long narrow shape, with Canada at the top, Maine to the east and Vermont to the west, and the short Atlantic coast in the southeast. The towns, county seats, lakes and railroads are engraved in fine lines, and the White Mountains and the rivers of the north are shown in hachured relief. Lake Winnipesaukee and the Connecticut River along the western border are among the clear features, and Manchester and other towns of the Merrimack valley are lettered in the south. A scale of miles and a key to county towns and railroads are given at the upper left, with the volume and plate numbers above.

The map shows New Hampshire as it stood in the 1880s, with the railroads running up the Merrimack and Connecticut valleys.
