About this piece
Johnson's Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut, a map published by Johnson and Ward in 1864, steel engraved with the counties and states outlined in pink and tinted in pink and green, within the ornamental chain border of Johnson's atlas. The title is lettered at the lower right.
The sheet is a tall rectangle, with Vermont and New Hampshire at the top, bordered by Canada to the north, Massachusetts across the middle, and Connecticut and Rhode Island below, looking out on Long Island Sound and the Atlantic. Towns, county boundaries, rivers and railroads are drawn throughout, and a legend of railroad and road symbols appears at the upper right. Parts of Maine and eastern New York can be seen at the edges, with Massachusetts Bay and Cape Cod at the lower right.
The map shows the New England railway network in the year before the end of the Civil War.
