About this piece
The northeastern United States and the Maritimes, an original copper-engraved map with hand-colored outlines, dated 1802 and attributed to Tardieu. Its French title, boxed at the lower right, reads: "Carte de la Partie Septentrionale des Etats Unis, comprenant le Canada, la Nouvelle Écosse, New Hampshire, Massachusett's Bay, Rhode-Island, Connecticut, New-York, État de Vermont, avec partie de Pensilvanie et de New-Jersey."
The sheet follows the coast from New Jersey to Newfoundland. Massachusetts Bay and Cape Cod, Long Island and the Hudson are engraved in detail along the lower left, while Nova Scotia, Cape Breton, Prince Edward Island and the Gulf of St. Lawrence take up the upper right. Newfoundland, outlined in a strong pink, closes the right edge, with the Atlantic lettered "Océan Atlantique ou Mer du Nord". The St. Lawrence runs up into Canada, and lakes, rivers and Native settlements are marked across the interior. A table of leagues and miles sits in the upper left corner.
The lettering names Vermont as a state, and the printed meridians are measured from Paris.
