About this piece
The North West Territories of Canada, an original color lithograph by Rand, McNally & Co. of Chicago, printed in 1899 on page 368 of the firm's indexed atlas. The side margin is lettered "Rand, McNally & Co's Northwest Territories." The outline is printed in black with the colors printed over it.
The sheet shows the pre-provincial districts of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Assiniboia, the Canadian prairie west before Alberta and Saskatchewan became provinces in 1905, from the Rocky Mountains and the edge of British Columbia in the west to the Manitoba line in the east, with the United States along the foot. A red legend at upper left, headed "Northwest Territories Railroads," numbers three lines: the Alberta Railway & Coal Co., the Canadian Pacific with its Dominion Express service, and the Manitoba & North-Western. The Canadian Pacific crosses the southern part of the sheet through Regina, and a secondary line runs north toward Prince Albert. Indian reserves, including the Blackfoot, Sarcee, Stony and Peigan reserves in Alberta, are outlined and named, and the Rockies and Cypress Hills are drawn in hachured relief.
The map records the prairie west as federal territory, on the eve of the settlement boom that preceded provincehood.
