About this piece
Toronto in 1899, a large-scale street plan and an original color lithograph by Rand, McNally & Co. of Chicago, printed on page 382 of the firm's indexed atlas. The outline is printed in black with the colors printed over it.
The plan runs from High Park and the Humber River on the west to the Don River valley on the east, and from the annexed northern suburbs, tinted yellow beyond the city limit, down to the waterfront on Lake Ontario. The built-up city is washed pink, with parks and institutional grounds picked out in green: Queen's Park and the grounds of the Ontario Parliament Buildings, Trinity College and the university grounds, and the cemeteries along the Don and to the north. Streets are named across the grid, with lettered and numbered border squares for finding places. The harbor is mapped in detail, with Toronto Island and its sand spit, the lagoons, Hanlan's Point and the lighthouse, and Humber Bay and Ashbridge's Bay on either side. A boxed inset at lower right, "Eastern Part of Toronto, on Same Scale," extends the plan past the Woodbine race course.
The side margin carries the lettering "Rand, McNally & Co's Toronto," and the sheet shows a rapidly growing city at the close of the 1890s.
