About this piece
The northwest sheet of the United States of North America, from the Royal Atlas of Modern Geography, published by W. and A.K. Johnston in Edinburgh and London in 1909. The sheet is an original engraving printed in color, with the title "United States of North America (North West Sheet)" and its scale at the upper right.
The map shows the Pacific Northwest and the Great Plains: Washington, Oregon, California, Idaho, Nevada, Utah, Montana, Wyoming and Colorado, with North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska and Kansas at the right edge. The states are outlined in color, the Rocky Mountains, the Sierra Nevada and the Cascades are drawn in hachures, and the coast of Puget Sound, the Columbia River and the lakes of the Great Basin appear in detail. Railways cross the sheet, and towns and counties are marked in the settled areas. At the upper left, the border with Canada appears.
By 1909 every state shown here had been admitted to the Union, which shows how much the western map had changed in a generation.
