About this piece
A map of the United States of North America from James Wyld's An Atlas of the World, published in London in 1845. The sheet is an original copper engraving with hand-colored state outlines, within a decorative border graduated in degrees. The title is set in an ornate cartouche at the lower right on the Atlantic, above a statistical table listing the states with their areas and populations.
The map covers the eastern states and extends west across the Mississippi into the plains. States are tinted in pale colors, with Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama set off in distinct shades. The Great Lakes fill the top, with rivers, towns and county lines throughout the settled East. West of the Mississippi, large territories remain only lightly marked, and in the lower left a small inset map of Florida is drawn. The Gulf of Mexico forms the southern edge.
The map was made in the middle of the 1840s, when the United States was expanding rapidly toward the Southwest.
