About this piece
The southeast sheet of the United States of North America, from the Royal Atlas of Modern Geography, published by W. and A.K. Johnston in Edinburgh and London in 1909. The sheet is an original engraving printed in color, with the title "United States of North America (South East Sheet)" and its scale at the right.
The main map covers the Gulf states and the South Atlantic coast: Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, South Carolina and North Carolina, with the Gulf of Mexico and the Bahamas below. The states are tinted and outlined in color, with the Mississippi delta and the Florida peninsula drawn in detail. Three insets fill the lower margin: the harbor and city of New York at the lower left, a plan of Washington beside it, and a larger map of Cuba across the bottom right.
The inclusion of Cuba reflects the close American involvement in the island after the Spanish-American War of 1898.
