About this piece

A view of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, a lithograph lettered "Rio-Janeiro" below the image and credited to the lithographic institute of Göthström and Magnusson, published circa 1900. The sheet is printed in soft black and gray and enclosed in a double ruled frame.

The viewpoint is from a wooded hillside above the city, with a track in the foreground where two small figures are walking. A house with a tiled roof stands at the left under tall trees, and palms and tropical foliage fill the middle ground. In the distance, church towers and rows of buildings stand along the shore beneath a long line of hills, with the water of the bay opening to the horizon.

The sheet is drawn in the picturesque manner of the nineteenth-century travel views of Brazil, with the dense vegetation set against the pale sky and the city kept small in the middle distance. The source of the plate is not known.
