About this piece

Two coastal views of the Patagonian coast near Port St. Julian, an original copper engraving from the Dutch edition of George Anson's Reize rondsom de Werreld, published in 1749. Mylen."

Each view is a long, narrow panorama. In the upper one, five ships of the squadron lie at anchor in front of a low coast of hills, with a conical peak near the middle; in the lower one a line of ships rides in a bay with a flat-topped mountain, the Woudsberg of the caption, in the distance. A small number appears in the upper left corner.

Puerto San Julian is a natural harbor on the coast of Santa Cruz Province in Argentina. Anson's squadron stopped here in 1741 to refit before rounding Cape Horn.
