About this piece

Railroad and Township Map of the State of Ohio, an original map from Atlas of Preble County Ohio by C.O. Titus, published in 1871. The sheet is printed in black with the counties outlined and tinted in pink, green and yellow, within a decorative scrolled border.

The title is lettered in the lower right corner as "Railroad & Township Map of the State of Ohio," beneath a small engraved vignette of a columned, domed public building. Every county is named and divided into its townships, and the railroad lines that crossed the state by 1871 are drawn in dark lines, converging on Cincinnati in the southwest, Columbus at the center and Cleveland on Lake Erie. The Ohio River forms the southern border with Kentucky, and parts of Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky and Canada are named around the margins. A small legend of railroad names and a scale of miles appear below the state, with a date lettered beneath.

The sheet served as the state-level map in a county atlas, placing Preble County in the southwest of Ohio.
