About this piece

A Botocudo family, an original lithograph lettered "Botokudenfamilie. Famille des Botokudes" and numbered 31 at the top. The Botocudo were an Indigenous people of the Brazilian interior, whose territory lay in what is now the state of Minas Gerais. The artist and publication are not named on the sheet, and the style is that of a German natural history and ethnography series of the 1840s.

The figures walk in single file along a shore. In front, a man carries a bundle of long spears and a large gourd across his shoulders, and wears an ornament in his lower lip. Behind him, a woman carries a child on her shoulders and a gourd, with a second small child at her side. A palm tree, ferns and agave plants stand in the foreground, and a broad stretch of water with a wooded far bank fills the background.

The print is lithographed, with soft shading in gray, and was published around 1845.
