About this piece
Big Hole Prairie, from the North, a color-tinted lithograph of 1856 from the Pacific Railroad Surveys reports (heading "U.S.P.R.R. Exp. & Surveys, 47th & 49th Parallels", "General Report, Plate XLIX"). The lettering beneath the image reads "Big Hole Prairie, from the North", with "Stanley del. after Gibbon" at lower left and the New York lithographers Sarony, Major & Knapp at lower right.
The view looks across a broad, pale grassland basin from a rocky rise in the foreground, past eroded banks of white clay and a belt of dark conifers, to a range of mountains under a band of clouds. A few animals graze in the middle distance and a winding stream runs along the right side.
Big Hole lies in southwestern Montana, and the plate belongs to the northern survey led by Isaac Stevens along the 47th and 49th parallels, one of the surveys that reported on routes for a Pacific railroad.
