About this piece
Two North American Indian couples on one sheet, original engravings made for Bankes's New System of Geography, "Published by Royal Authority", and dated 1787. The running title is engraved across the top of the sheet, and each of the two views carries its own caption beneath.
The upper view is captioned "A Man & Woman of the Chipeways to the eastward of the Mississippi in North America." A man stands at the left with a drawn bow, wearing a feathered headdress, a necklace and a breechcloth, while a woman in a long dress stands beside a tree at the right with a child at her side, with rocky hills and water behind them.
The lower view is captioned "A Man & Woman of the Nawdowessies to the westward of the Mississippi in North America." A man in a plumed headdress, with leggings and a long-barreled gun, faces a woman in a loose robe who leads a small child by the hand, under a spreading tree with distant hills. The Chippeway are the Ojibwe, and the Nawdowessies are the Sioux, shown here as eighteenth century European engravers imagined them on either side of the Mississippi.
