About this piece

Timber depot near Quebec, a hand-colored steel engraving after William Henry Bartlett, engraved by H. Adlard, dated 1850. The plate title "Timber Depot near Quebec" is engraved in script beneath the image, with the artist's name at lower left and the engraver's name at lower right.

The view looks down from a wooded bank on the St. Lawrence. In the foreground a figure sits at the foot of a tall pine looking out over the river, and spruce trees fill the slope at the left. A wide field of floating logs and timber rafts covers the water along the shore below a high rocky headland, with a line of houses along the foot of the cliff. Sailing ships lie at anchor further out on the river, and the far bank rises low and blue beyond them.

The timber trade was one of the main businesses of Quebec in the first half of the nineteenth century, with square timber rafted down the St. Lawrence and loaded for the British market. Bartlett (1809 to 1854) was an English artist who traveled widely in North America and whose views were engraved by several hands for illustrated travel books.
