About this piece
The Indians of Guiana, an original hand-colored engraving titled "Guianers", from De Mensch, zoo als hij voorkomt op den bekenden aardbol, the Dutch survey of the world's peoples written by Martinus Stuart and published in Amsterdam around 1805. The drawing is credited "J. Kuyper del." at the lower left, with the engraver's name at the right.
Under a thatched roof a man reclines in a hammock, wearing a feathered headband and holding a fan. A woman stands at the left with a bow and arrow in one hand, a string of beads at her neck and bands at her ankles, and with her other hand she lifts a green parrot toward the roof beam. In the foreground are baskets, a dark pot, shells and a carved seat on which a small musical instrument rests, and a palm tree rises in the sunlit background. The coloring is laid in tan, green and soft blue over fine line and stipple.
Guiana, on the northern coast of South America, was divided among Dutch, British and French colonies, and the Dutch colony there made it a familiar subject to the readers of this series.
