About this piece

Houses and dress of the people of Florida in an engraved plate with the French heading "Habits et Maisons des Floridiens," set in a ruled border and numbered "Tom. XIV" and "N° V" in the lower margin.

A man and a woman stand in the foreground, the man draped in a cloth with one arm raised and a child at his side. A tall palm leans over them at the left. Behind the couple stand houses with tiled roofs and open porches, with figures seated in the shade, and further buildings rise at the right where smoke drifts across the sky. The border is a double line with a tooled pattern inside it.

The volume and plate numbers show that the sheet belongs to a multi-volume French work of geography or travel, in which illustrations of customs and dwellings accompanied the text. The architecture and costume are those of a European artist's idea of the region, drawn without close knowledge of Florida.
