About this piece

Hawaiian Islanders, Portraits and Cultural Scenes – Three Small Engravings, Paris 1836

This attractive group of three small engravings depicting the Hawaiian Islands (Îles Hawaï) was published in Paris in 1836 and reflects the growing European fascination with the peoples and cultures of the Pacific during the early nineteenth century. Produced after the era of Captain James Cook's voyages and subsequent explorations, these prints offered European audiences visual impressions of Hawaiian life, appearance, customs, and social traditions at a time when the islands remained largely unfamiliar to the Western world.

The first engraving, Portrait de trois Indigènes, presents three Hawaiian islanders in carefully observed bust-length portraits. Their hairstyles, facial features, and draped garments reflect contemporary European attempts to document the appearance and identity of Pacific peoples. Such ethnographic portraits were highly valued in travel literature and scientific publications of the period.

The second plate, Intérieur de la maison d’un Chef, depicts the interior of a Hawaiian chief's residence. The scene offers a fascinating glimpse into domestic life and social hierarchy, showing figures gathered within a traditional structure constructed of woven materials. The composition reflects nineteenth-century European interest in indigenous architecture, customs, and daily life.

The third engraving, Danse des femmes, illustrates a ceremonial dance performed by Hawaiian women accompanied by musicians and spectators. The print captures the rhythmic movement and communal nature of traditional Hawaiian performance, providing a visual record of cultural practices that fascinated European travelers and ethnographers.

Published during a period of increasing maritime exploration and global exchange, these engravings belong to the rich tradition of illustrated voyage literature. They combine ethnographic curiosity with the elegant engraving style characteristic of French publishing in the first half of the nineteenth century.

Today, early images of Hawaii are highly sought after by collectors of Pacific exploration, Polynesian history, ethnography, travel literature, and decorative prints. Sets of related plates are especially desirable, as they provide a broader visual narrative of Hawaiian society and culture during the early contact period.

Condition report: Good antique condition with age-related toning, occasional light foxing, and minor handling wear consistent with age. Please examine the images carefully for exact condition.
