About this piece

Indigenous people of Peru, an original hand-colored engraving published in 1828 from the atlas of Louis Isidore Duperrey's voyage around the world in the corvette La Coquille. The plate is lettered "Indigènes du Pérou" and carries the note "Voyage de la Coquille" at the upper right, with the artist's and engraver's credits and the printer's imprint in the lower margin.

Two bust-length portraits stand alone on the wide sheet. The man at the left wears a blue garment with puffed shoulders and a cross hung on a cord at his chest, and the woman at the right has dark hair in a long braid and a dark dress. The faces are carefully observed, and the coloring is applied by hand in a restrained palette.

Duperrey's expedition left France in 1822 and returned in 1825, and the atlas of plates that came from it recorded the peoples and places visited in South America and the Pacific.
