About this piece
The inhabitants of Unalaska in the Aleutian Islands, an original hand-colored engraving titled "Inwooners van Oonolaska", from De Mensch, zoo als hij voorkomt op den bekenden aardbol, the Dutch survey of the world's peoples written by Martinus Stuart and published in Amsterdam around 1805. The drawing is credited "J. Kuyper del." at the lower left, with the engraver's name at the right.
Two figures stand close together. The man at the right wears a long yellow-brown waterproof garment with fringe at the shoulders and a visored wooden hat decorated with a crest of long bristles. He holds a long paddle, with a coil of cord at his waist, and stands on the deck of a skin boat with tools and a float lying around him. The woman at the left, in a fur-trimmed coat decorated with beads and fringes and with ornaments at the face, holds what looks like a carved mask or skull. Snowy mountains and clouds fill the background. The coloring is in olive, gray, blue and brown washes.
Unalaska is in the eastern Aleutians, where Russian traders and the voyages of the late eighteenth century produced the first detailed European images of the Unangan people.
