About this piece

The negotiated end of fighting between British officers and Jamaican Maroons, in an original engraving lettered "Pacification with the Maroon Negroes". The caption beneath records "Drawn from the life by Agostino Brunias" and "From an original painting in the possession of Sir Wm. Young Bart. F.R.S.", and the plate is signed "Scott sculp." It was published in the 1818 London edition of Bryan Edwards' History of the British West Indies.

On the left a group of Maroon men stand in a loose line facing the officers, their heads wrapped in cloths, with loincloths and pouches slung at their sides. One kneels in the foreground before a heap of laid-down muskets and swords. Under an open tent at the right, a British officer in a tricorn hat sits in a camp chair with his hand extended, beside a standing officer who holds a paper, a soldier in a tall cap, and a dog at his feet. Palms rise behind them on a wooded slope.

The Maroons were communities descended from Africans who escaped slavery and held out in Jamaica's mountainous interior. Brunias (about 1730 to 1796) was an Italian-born painter who worked in the British West Indies. Edwards (1743 to 1800) was a Jamaica planter and historian who defended the plantation system.
