About this piece
A map of the City of Philadelphia as a tribute to the city's volunteer fire companies, drawn by Jacob Riegel and published by The Insurance Company of North America (INA), the oldest insurance company in the United States, founded in 1792. The title is lettered across the foot, and the sheet is printed in color.
At the center is a reproduction of A. P. Folie's plan of Philadelphia, issued in 1794, only two years after the founding of the INA, when the city was the capital of the nation. The Schuylkill River appears at the top and the Delaware at the bottom, crowded with ships. Added to the plan are 36 "Engine & Hose Houses" and 33 important buildings, with a numbered key at left, in a red-and-black overprint. A decorative title cartouche with a coat of arms sits at the right of the plan.
Flanking the map, in two broad bands, are vignettes of fire-fighting scenes, and rows of firemen in the uniforms of different periods run along the top. Hand-drawn fire engines, from early hand pumpers to steam engines, run in a line along the bottom.
