About this piece

The Stone Walls on the upper Missouri River, an original steel engraving of about 1850 from Meyer's Universum, published by the Bibliographisches Institut in Hildburghausen. The plate is lettered in German "Die Stone Walls (Oberer Missouri)", and the lower margin carries the imprint "Aus d. Kunstanst. d. Bibliogr. Instit. in Hildburghausen" and "Eigenthum d. Verlegers".

Weathered pinnacles and towers of sandstone rise at the right above a grassy bluff, in the formations that give the place its name. Two deer stand on a rocky ledge in the foreground, among twisted branches and low foliage. The river lies calm below, with a snag at the left and a small boat in the middle distance. It carries the eye past more cliffs and escarpments to a pale horizon.

The Stone Walls lie on the upper Missouri in what is now Montana. The same view also appears in an English-lettered version of the plate.
