About this piece
United States, an original steel-engraved decorative map from a Tallis atlas of the 1850s, drawn and engraved by J. Rapkin and published by J. & F. Tallis, with outline color for each state and border vignettes illustrated by J. Marchant and engraved by J. Rogers. The title "United States" is lettered in a panel at the top of the border.
The map covers the country east of the Pacific slope with Canada above and the Gulf of Mexico below. States and territories are outlined in color, with the Mississippi, the Great Lakes and the Atlantic coast drawn in detail, and Texas extends west across the Rio Grande region in a large outline. Two coats of arms, one of them a shield with stars and stripes, stand at the head of the sheet. The border carries a view of the Capitol at Washington at the upper left, the Washington Monument at the lower right, oval portraits of Washington and Franklin on either side, a buffalo hunt at the lower left and a scene with figures in the center of the foot.
The patterns of states and territories mark the country at the middle of the nineteenth century, when Texas and the lands west to the Pacific had only recently been added.
