About this piece
Johnson's Arkansas, Mississippi and Louisiana, a map published by Johnson and Ward in 1864, steel engraved with the counties outlined and tinted in pink and green and set within the ornamental chain border of Johnson's atlas.
The three states are drawn together on one tall sheet. Arkansas fills the upper left, Louisiana the lower left with its delta country and the coast on the Gulf of Mexico, and Mississippi the right, with the Mississippi River winding down the middle as the boundary between them. County lines, towns, railroads, bayous and rivers are shown, with the eastern edge of Texas, and the title is set in an ornamental block at the upper right.
The year places the map in the middle of the Civil War. Its rivers and rail lines show the region over which much of the Mississippi Valley campaign was fought.
