About this piece
The inhabitants of Quito, an original hand-colored engraving titled "Inwoners van Quito", from De Mensch, zoo als hij voorkomt op den bekenden aardbol, the Dutch survey of the world's peoples written by Martinus Stuart and published in Amsterdam around 1805. The drawing is credited "J. Kuyper del." at the lower left, with the engraver's name at the right.
Two barefoot women walk toward the viewer along a stony path. The woman at the left wears a gray tunic knotted at the shoulder and carries a bundle slung over her back, while the second, wearing a headband, carries a woven basket and a small child riding on her back. Behind them, ripe fields of grain climb the hillside, and a village of tiled roofs with a palm and a church tower sits in the valley under green mountains and a pale sky. The coloring is soft and kept to grays, greens and straw yellows.
Quito, high in the Andes, was then a Spanish colonial city in the Audiencia of Quito, and the series built its views of such places from the travel literature available to Dutch readers.
