About this piece
A set of four engraved sheets on Mexico and nearby Central America, from the Iconographic Encyclopaedia of the Arts and Sciences, the work of Johann Georg Heck as revised and edited for American use by Daniel Brinton. Each sheet is headed "Americans" with a plate number and numbered captions beneath the images.
The sheets group subjects by theme. One has Mexican figures and rooms: a couple in regional costume, an interior, a village scene and costume figures at the foot. Another is given to figures of Mexican people, a framed painted subject and carved stone sculptures, with costumed figures at the left and right. A third takes ancient architecture, with a large stepped pyramid at the lower right, a carved stone doorway, lintel and relief, pottery and a roll of cloth. The fourth shows portraits of Native peoples, bows and arrows, a bowl, figures in feathered dress and a crowded hut interior. The engravings are in black and white on toned paper.
The four plates give a compact view of the country's peoples, buildings and objects as a nineteenth-century encyclopedia showed them.
