About this piece
Two coastal views from George Anson's voyage around the world, on one sheet of an original copper engraving published in 1749 in the Dutch edition, Reize rondsom de Werreld. The upper view is lettered in Dutch and French as the mountain of Petaplan and the rocks called the White Monks (Witte Broeders, Moines Blancs), seen at five miles' distance to the south east, and the lower view as the islands of Quibo and Quicara.
Both are low horizontal profiles of the sea horizon, drawn the way navigators recorded landfalls so that other ships could identify the coast. At the top, the high hills of Petatlan on the Mexican Pacific coast rise left of center, and a pair of small rocks stands out to sea, with two ships riding at the right. The lower panel shows the long, low line of Coiba island (Quibo) off the coast of Panama, with a rocky islet at the left and three sailing ships at the right.
Anson's squadron called along this coast in 1741 and 1742, and the engraved views gave later navigators a record of the landfalls.
