About this piece
An Indian woman of Puebla, Mexico, an original color print from the first volume of the Dutch edition of "De Volken van den Aardbodem" by Dr. Heinrich Berghaus, published by G. B. van Goor in Gouda in 1855. The plate is lettered in Dutch "Indiaansche Vrouw van Puebla."
A single standing figure fills the sheet, set against a pale tinted ground with a soft cast shadow at her feet. She wears a long striped shawl drawn over her head and shoulders, a white blouse, and a full blue skirt with a broad yellow patterned band at the hem, with blue slippers, and she rests one hand on a low ledge holding a small orange fruit. The costume colors are applied in bright washes, so the dress stands out against the plain paper.
Berghaus, a German geographer, compiled his ethnographic survey of the peoples of the world as a series of costume and type portraits, and the Dutch edition issued these plates for readers in the Netherlands. Puebla, southeast of Mexico City, was a major city of colonial and nineteenth-century Mexico.
