About this piece

A pair of deer on a rocky ledge above the Missouri River, an original steel engraving of about 1850 titled "The Stone Walls" with a parenthetical Missouri reference beneath. The Bibliographisches Institut imprint of Hildburghausen appears in the lower margin.

The Stone Walls are the weathered sandstone formations along the upper Missouri, and here they rise at the right as a crowd of pinnacles and towers above a grassy bluff. A pair of deer stands at the edge of the foreground ledge, among twisted bare branches and low foliage. The river lies calm below, a driftwood snag in the water at the left foreground and a small boat in the middle distance, and it carries the eye past more cliffs and escarpments to a pale horizon under a soft sky.

The same subject appears in a German-lettered version titled "Die Stone Walls (Oberer Missouri)", which locates the formations on the upper Missouri rather than in the state of Missouri.
