About this piece
Two scenes from the Native peoples of Florida, titled "Cérémonie, observée par un des Rois de la Floride, avant que de faire une Expedition" and "Un des Rois de la Floride, consultant son Magicien, avant que de marcher à l'Ennemi". The sheet is an original copper engraving by Bernard Picart, from the Cérémonies et coutumes religieuses of the early eighteenth century, in an edition of 1722.
The upper scene shows a king standing at the center of a seated circle of warriors, holding up a vessel in a ritual before an expedition sets out. Large pots stand on the ground, a fire burns at the right, and warriors hold bows, clubs and feathered headdresses, with a palm and mountains in the background. In the lower scene, a standing crowd of armed men watches while a king kneels in front of a figure who is raised in a ring on the ground, the magician consulting the spirits before the march against the enemy. Picart's signature appears at the lower left of the upper plate.
These views were drawn in Europe from earlier travel accounts rather than from direct observation, and are best read as how Florida's peoples were imagined in the early 1700s.
