About this piece
New York State at the scale of a full atlas spread, an original lithographed map dated 1876 and attributed to Samuel Augustus Mitchell Jr., with outline and wash color by county. The word "New York" is set in large letters at the lower left, and the sheet carries the printed page number of the atlas it was taken from.
The state is shown from Lake Erie and Lake Ontario in the west to the Hudson and Long Island in the southeast, with each county tinted in pink, yellow, green or blue and the state boundary marked in a heavier red line. Railroads are drawn across the whole of the state, and the Adirondack region in the northeast is shaded with hachures. Three insets fill the corners: a plan of the Niagara River and its vicinity at the upper left, the Hudson River and its vicinity along the right edge, and a vicinity map of New York City at the lower left.
The Niagara and Hudson insets cover the two corridors that carried the state's traffic and travel, the frontier at the falls and the river route from the harbor to Albany and beyond. The date of 1876 is the centennial year of the republic, when atlases were being updated across the country.
