About this piece
A bird's-eye map of Manhattan in the manner of Hermann Bollmann, issued as the picture side of a folding "New York Map-Guide" for American Airlines. The listing dates it 1964, and it is a color lithograph.
The view takes in the island from the Hudson River at the left to the East River at the lower right, with Central Park at the upper right. Individual buildings are drawn in perspective and tinted in blues, yellows and browns, so that blocks of tenements, skyscrapers and rail yards can be read building by building. Piers along the Hudson are lined with ocean liners and ships, and small vessels are shown at the East River edge. The sheet is lettered "New York" at the top edge.
The reverse carries a large street and transportation map of all five boroughs with adjoining New Jersey and inset regional maps. The cover reads "New York Map-Guide: Picture Map in Full Color, Street and Subway Maps" and advertises American Airlines as "America's Leading Airline", placing the sheet in the early jet era, when air travel was reshaping tourism to the city.
