About this piece
The International and Christmas Recorder, a color lithograph poster for the Christmas edition of the New York Recorder, dated 1893. The title is lettered in large decorative capitals across the top, with a young woman in red seated on a globe at upper left holding a banner reading "The New York Recorder", and Santa Claus at upper right.
The rest of the sheet is a crowded panel of advertisements, divided by a ribbon and holly garland. Among them are the American Line ("New York and Southampton", billed as "the only trans-Atlantic line sailing under the American flag"), the Red Star Line to Antwerp, the Erie Lines with solid vestibuled trains between New York, Chicago, Cleveland and Cincinnati, the New York and New England Railroad between New York and Boston, with the Norwich Line steamer, and the Baltimore and Ohio's Royal Blue Line trains between New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington. A band across the foot advertises Scott's Emulsion, "for coughs, colds, weak lungs, consumption, scrofula, anaemia", prepared by Scott and Bowne of New York.
The poster is a showcase of the railroad and steamship travel advertising of the 1890s, set against a seasonal frame for a New York daily.
