About this piece
South America on a single sheet, an original map from an atlas of 1882 published by Blackie & Son, with the title "South America" in the lower right. The map is colored in outline by country, in pink, yellow and green.
The whole continent is shown, from the Caribbean coast in the north to Cape Horn and Tierra del Fuego in the south, with the Andes drawn down the western edge in dense hachures and the great river systems of the Amazon, Orinoco and Paraná traced across the interior. Coastal towns are named all along the shores, and national boundaries are drawn as they stood in the early 1880s, with Brazil filling the eastern bulge. Small islands are drawn off the southern coast, and parallels and meridians curve across the ocean.
The map is a general view in the same series as the atlas's larger regional maps of Brazil, Peru and Bolivia, and the southern republics.
