About this piece
Northern South America on Alexander Keith Johnston's "South America, Northern Sheet," an original map from his Royal Atlas of Modern Geography, published by William Blackwood and Sons, Edinburgh and London, in 1865. The sheet is numbered 47 at the upper right and carries the atlas heading "Keith Johnston's General Atlas." It is printed in black with delicate outline color on the borders.
The map covers the Pacific coast of Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, the Guianas and the mouth of the Amazon on the Atlantic, and the interior of Brazil, Bolivia and Matto Grosso. The Amazon and its tributaries are traced in blue across the center, the Andes are shown in fine hachured relief down the western edge, and the coast carries dense lettering of ports and headlands. The title block at upper right is lettered "South America (Northern Sheet)" with the author's credit and a set of comparative scales. A small inset at the lower left shows the Galapagos Islands.
Johnston, geographer to the Queen for Scotland, was among the leading atlas makers of Victorian Britain, and his atlas sheets are known for their fine engraving and clear lettering.
