About this piece

The jaguar, a lithograph from the Dutch natural history work De Zoogdieren, afgebeeld en in hunne levenswijze geschetst, plate 81. The sheet is lettered "De Jaguar of Amerikaansche Tijger" (the jaguar or American tiger) beneath the image.

The cat is shown in profile on a patch of bare ground, walking toward the left with its head level and its long tail hanging in a curve. The coat is drawn with the large broken rosettes and solid spots that mark the species, against a paler belly, and the lithographer has shaded the muscle of the shoulders and forelegs with fine crayon work. The figure stands on a plain ground with a soft cast shadow and no background scenery.

The jaguar (Panthera onca) is the largest cat of the Americas, ranging from Mexico through Central America into South America, with its greatest numbers in the Amazon basin. The common Dutch name "American tiger" reflects how early naturalists compared it with the tiger of the Old World.
