About this piece
A man of Christmas Sound in Tierra del Fuego, a copper engraving from the Dutch edition of Captain Cook's voyages, "Reizen rondom de Waereld," translated by J. D. Pasteur and published by Honkoop, Allart and Van Cleef, 1803. The plate is lettered in Dutch "Man van Kersmis Kanaal op het Vuurland" below the image and carries a plate number at the upper right.
The portrait shows a man head and shoulders in a vertical frame, with thick, tangled hair falling about his face and a dark cloak draped over his shoulders, leaving the chest bare, where a few lines mark the skin. The background is lightly shaded. The image is a small engraved vignette set low within a broad, clean plate margin, a format common to the plates of the Dutch Cook edition.
Kersmis Kanaal is the Dutch form of Christmas Sound, on the southwest coast of Tierra del Fuego. Cook's ships called there during the second voyage, and the people encountered at the far tip of South America were among the groups engraved for the voyage accounts, which were translated and reissued across Europe.
