About this piece

Two coastal views from the voyage of George Anson around the world, an engraving from a Dutch edition of Anson's "Reize rondsom de Werreld", published around 1760. The captions are in Dutch: "Kaap Sint Maria aan 't begin van de Straat Magellaan" and "Een gedeelte der N.O. Zyde van Tierra del Fuego aan het inkomen van de Straat le Maire". The plate is numbered "N°. 6" at the upper left.

The sheet is divided into two long, narrow strips. In the upper view, a line of ships of the squadron stands off a low, level coast at the entrance to the Strait of Magellan. The lower strip shows a stretch of the northeast side of Tierra del Fuego, with the squadron in a row in the foreground and the jagged peaks of the land low on the horizon behind.

Anson's squadron sailed in 1740 and he returned to England in 1744, having circled the globe. The engraved coastal profiles were meant as sailing aids, allowing later navigators to recognize landfalls on the passage around the tip of South America.
