About this piece
A View of Ohiopyle Falls in Pennsylvania, an original copper engraving of about 1800 with later hand color. The plate title, "A View of Ohiopyle Falls in Pennsylvania," is engraved in italic script beneath the image. The maker and the book it was issued in are not named on the sheet.
The view looks across the broad, rippling pool at the foot of the falls to the low, wide cascade where the Youghiogheny River drops over a rock ledge. Dense woods close in on both banks, a dark outcrop of rock fills the foreground, and a pale sky with a single large cloud stands over the treeline. Two small figures, one in red and one in blue, stand on the grassy bank at the lower right and give the scene its scale.
Ohiopyle lies on the Youghiogheny in southwestern Pennsylvania, in the Laurel Highlands, and the falls were a natural wonder of the Allegheny country that early travel books and magazines were glad to illustrate. The plain, sober engraving and the date of about 1800 place the sheet among the earliest printed views of the site.
