About this piece
Venezuela, Colombia and Ecuador, an original map from an atlas of 1882 published by Blackie & Son. The title block at lower right reads "Venezuela, United States of Colombia (or New Granada) and Ecuador". The map is colored in outline by country.
The sheet covers the northern Andes and the Caribbean coast. The three ranges of the Andes of Colombia are drawn in dense hachures and the Magdalena valley runs between them. The Caribbean Sea occupies the top left with the coast of Venezuela, the Orinoco and its tributaries cross the eastern part of the map, and the interior is named "Granada". Ecuador runs down the Pacific coast at the lower left, with its mountains and rivers. The islands off the Venezuelan coast, including Margarita, appear at the top.
The title records Colombia's name in 1882, the United States of Colombia, with the older name New Granada in parentheses.
