About this piece
Brazil and its neighbors in 1884, an original engraved map titled "Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay & Guayana", prepared by the Scottish cartographer John Bartholomew and published in Edinburgh by A. & C. Black in the new and revised edition of Black's General Atlas of the World. The sheet is numbered 51 at the upper right, and the boundaries are colored by hand.
The map covers the Atlantic side of South America from the Guianas in the north, drawn in separate colors at the top left, down to Uruguay and the mouth of the Río de la Plata in the south. The imperial provinces of Brazil, among them Pará, Mato Grosso, São Paulo and Paraná, are lettered across the sheet. The Amazon system, the Madeira, the São Francisco and other rivers are traced in detail, with towns, ports and the long Atlantic coast lettered, and Paraguay appears at the lower left in green.
The map shows Brazil as an empire. The monarchy fell in 1889, five years after the date of this map, and the provinces shown here became the states of the republic.
