About this piece
Pre-Columbian objects from Peruvian burial sites, an original copperplate engraving from Jorge Juan and Antonio de Ulloa's Relación Histórica del Viaje a la América Meridional, published in Madrid in 1748. The plate is numbered "Lámina XV" at the upper right, and a long Spanish title heads the sheet: "Explicación de las piezas, labradas por los Indios Gentiles que se encuentran en sus Guacas ó Sepulcros".
Below the title the plate lays out a scatter of objects, each marked with a letter keyed to the explanatory text above. At the upper left a seated mummified figure with a bundled body rests on a rock. Across the center are a mound, a large oval plate, a ceremonial axe with a long handle and a vine-like ornament, and circular and oval discs. Below them are axe heads of several shapes, a small mortar-like vessel, double-bodied jars, long pins with decorative heads (one with a star-shaped head), and small ornaments.
Juan and Ulloa traveled in Peru and Ecuador between 1735 and 1745, members of the French-Spanish Geodesic Mission that measured a degree of latitude at the equator. Their account was among the first published to illustrate Andean antiquities.
