About this piece

The main square of Santiago de Chile, an original steel engraving printed in Paris in the 1860s. The plate is lettered "Grande Place de Santiago de Chili", engraved by Aubert and printed by Chardon, and belongs to a series of Latin American city views published around 1867.

The square is seen from a raised viewpoint. A long arcade of arches with pinnacles runs across the right side, and a balconied building closes the left. In the open square, carts with horses stand among market traders, baskets and goods, and men in cloaks and ponchos walk through. Beyond the low tiled roofs of the city rises the rocky hill of Santa Lucía, with the foothills of the Andes behind.

The Plaza de Armas has been the center of Chilean civic life since the city's founding, and the plate shows it as a working marketplace in the mid-19th century.
