About this piece
British North America, the Dominion of Canada, an original map from the 1882 Blackie atlas, published by Blackie & Son. The title "British North America. The Dominion of Canada." is engraved in the upper right, with scales beneath it, and the plate number 49 is printed in the upper right corner.
The sheet shows the whole of Canada, from the Pacific coast at the left across the prairies and the Great Lakes to the Atlantic provinces and Newfoundland at the right, with the Arctic islands at the top and the Hudson Bay as a great inland sea at the center. Outline color separates the provinces and the territories of the northwest, and the southern boundary against the United States runs along the lower edge. Rivers, lakes and mountain ranges are drawn in detail. The northwest corner is labeled as United States territory, which is Alaska.
The date of 1882 falls fifteen years after Confederation and only a few years before the Canadian Pacific Railway was completed across the continent.
